Oher and Tyson – not to mention countless influencers and wannabe celebs – share the conviction that they own, box and can monetize, their life stories. And given regular news stories about studios buying “life story rights,” it’s not surprising to see why.
It was Tyson’s 50th professional win and his 44th KO (not counting the stoppage of Andrew Golota, which was changed to a no contest after Tyson failed the post-fight drug test for marijuana). It was also the final victory of his career.
Given the controversy that both parties tend to attract, the bout is one of the most anticipated events on this year’s sporting calendar, not least because the pair have traded some pretty public barbs in the lead-up to the event.
“Nowadays, the promotion of boxing in China has increased a lot compared to before,” he explains. “Many young people have paid attention to boxing and professional boxing. Many teenagers like this sport.
Tyson retired from professional boxing in 2005 due to a combination of physical decline, mental and emotional challenges, and financial troubles. After a series of losses that highlighted his decreasing ability to compete at a top level, Tyson acknowledged that he no longer had the heart to fight. His physical capabilities had diminished with age, and he struggled with motivation and focus, which were compounded by significant financial difficulties. These factors led him to conclude his boxing career after a defeat to Kevin McBride.
When did Mike Tyson get his tattoo and showed it to the public for the first time, it elicited a wide range of reactions. Some praised the boldness and uniqueness of the design, while others criticized it as unconventional or even controversial.
For all his talk of being more active and earning a rematch with Lewis, Tyson’s personal demons were consuming him. He wouldn’t actually enter the ring again until July 2004, when the 38-year-old Tyson was upset by Britain’s Danny Williams, before one last defeat by Kevin McBride in 2005. Two opponents who, with respect, would have been demolished by Tyson at the peak of his powers.
The victory over Seldon gave Tyson the WBA championship and a legitimate claim to fighting Evander Holyfield, who he had been waiting to fight since 1991. Holyfield was seen as a washed-up fighter, in danger even of being killed in the ring by Tyson. Holyfield was a 25-1 underdog, but he would make $11 million to Tyson’s $30 million. Despite the long odds, Holyfield was the first man whom Tyson faced since he was released from prison who would fight back. In the sixth round, Holyfield opened a cut over Tyson’s left eye with a head butt and then dropped Tyson with a left hook. It was only the second time Tyson was knocked down in his whole career. At that point Holyfield said that he knew he had beaten Tyson and for the rest of the fight, he jabbed Tyson and stayed out of his rival’s reach. Tyson lost, but the fight grossed $100 million and a rematch was assured.
“Talk about a great pairing of nicknames — “The Bronze Bomber” versus “Big Bang” Zhang. This is a fight that demands a knockout ending, and according to the oddsmakers who have Zhang a slight favorite, one has the right to assume they’re most swayed by the difference in punch resistance that favors Zhang as well as Wilder’s dismal performance against common conqueror Joseph Parker, a man Zhang floored twice before losing on points. If Zhang lands his lethal left cross on Wilder’s chin, especially early, there will be no opportunity for Wilder to exploit Zhang’s biggest weakness, stamina. That’s what happened in the Joe Joyce rematch and the pick is that Zhang’s “Big Bang” will be enough to take out the “Bronze Bomber.”
There are no cheat days to enjoy fast food or stay up late watching movies. “During camp I have one day off on a Sunday,” he says. “If there is no fight coming up then I’ll train Monday to Friday and have two days off at the weekend.”
A Voice for the Voiceless: Tyson’s journey turned towards helping others. He became an outspoken advocate for mental health, using his platform to speak candidly about his struggles with depression, addiction, and the demons of his past. Tyson transformed his narrative from one of a fallen star to a beacon of hope for those facing similar battles.
But Tyson’s game seemed to be on the decline. Once known for his complicated offensive and defensive moves, the boxer seemed to continually rely on his one-punch knockout move to finish his bouts. He blamed his trainer for his struggles in the ring and fired Rooney in mid-1988.
But whoops! Zinad gets too brave and Bivol sits him down with a right hand as Zinad got caught square inside. Bivol steps in with a jab then a 2, 3 that floored Zinad. He seems OK though and he’s up and jabbing again. Zinad had an excellent round, and yet still got dropped. That probably doesn’t bode well for him.
At the time, the face work created quite a buzz for varied reasons. However, no one can deny that, over the years, it has become a part of the Mike Tyson identity. Jake Paul might have bona fide reasons to honor the boxing great. But whether it will find acceptance among fans and followers, time alone will tell.
